Holi is an Indian religious holiday, otherwise known as "the festival of colors." Holi is celebrated because of an old religious story in which Hiranyakashipu awas given a boon by Lord Bramha.. Hiranyakashipu demanded that he couldn't be killed "during day or night; inside the home or outside, bot on earth or in the sky; neither by man nor animal, neither by astra nor by shastra'. He could not be killed in any imaginable way. Afterwards, he demanded that instead of praying to the Gods, the villagers start worshiping and respecting him. The only problem with that was that his son Prahlada kept offering prayers to Vishnu. Even though Hiranyakashipu threatened him, Prahlada wouldn't stop. Hiranyakashipu decided to take drastic measures and tried killing his son by poisoning him, putting him in the way of an elephant stampede, and leaving him in a room full of poisonous snakes. Prahlada managed to survive all that by just believing in Lord Vishnu and never giving up hope. As a last resort, Hiranyakashipu asked his sister Holika, who is immune to fire, to sit on the pyre with Prahlada so that he would burn to death. Because of Prahlada's belief in Vishnu, he survived the fire unscathed while Holika burned. The burning of Holika and Prahlada's salvation is called Holi. This festtival is also called the festival of colors because it is a way of saying goodbye to Winter and welcoming Spring in India. The seperation between classes is reduced and everyone celebrates by throwing colors at eachother and lighting a bonfire.
